External ProRes
The Creator SSD is intended for direct recording on supported USB-C iPhone Pro models, including 4K60 workflows on iPhone 15 Pro and up to 4K120 on supported later Pro devices.
Planck Creator SSD review · iPhone ProRes storage
Planck Creator SSD plugs directly into USB-C devices, removing the separate cable and mount normally attached to a mobile filming rig. For supported iPhone Pro models, it is a remarkably small route to external ProRes recording—provided you check fit, format and settings before the take.
Simon’s review
“The most valuable feature is not a benchmark number. It is removing the cable, mount and dangling weight from a phone rig when I need to move and keep recording.”Simon Songhurst · Photographer & filmmaker
Traditional portable SSDs can be fast, but most assume a desk, a cable and somewhere to put the drive. On a phone or gimbal, that creates a small rigging problem: secure the drive, manage the cable and protect two connection points.
Planck takes a different route by placing the USB-C plug on the drive itself. That makes the setup smaller and removes the cable from the recording chain. The Creator SSD uses NVMe storage and a USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface, with Planck quoting speeds up to 1050 MB/s.
Direct connection also creates a different responsibility. Check that your case leaves enough clearance, avoid side loads on the phone port and never treat the plugged-in drive as a handle. For moving shots, test the complete rig and rebalance the gimbal after every change.
Who should consider it?
The Creator SSD is intended for direct recording on supported USB-C iPhone Pro models, including 4K60 workflows on iPhone 15 Pro and up to 4K120 on supported later Pro devices.
A direct-plug SSD removes the separate data cable and drive mount. You still need correct balance, clear port access and enough physical protection for the connector.
ExFAT formatting supports cross-platform use across many current phones, tablets and computers. Treat it as working storage, not the only copy of valuable footage.
Before recording
Confirm that your exact phone, application, codec, resolution and frame rate support external recording. “USB-C compatible” does not mean every device supports every capture mode.
Check case clearance and connector seating. Long recordings draw power and generate heat, so begin with a charged phone and test thermal behaviour under realistic conditions.
Format as required, record beyond the length of a typical shot, stop cleanly and play the file back. Verify capacity, dropped frames and file integrity before paid work.
Planck versus a cabled SSD
| Decision | Planck direct-plug SSD | Traditional cabled SSD |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile rigging | No separate cable or SSD mount; very small and light. | Requires cable management and somewhere to secure the drive. |
| Port protection | Compact, but force on the drive can transfer directly to the USB-C port. | A secured drive and flexible cable may isolate some movement if rigged properly. |
| Gimbal setup | Less loose hardware, but the side-mounted weight and clearance still require testing. | More parts to balance; placement can be adjusted around the rig. |
| Desk use | Convenient for quick transfers where the adjacent port area is clear. | A cable can make positioning easier and avoid blocking neighbouring ports. |
| Best fit | Phone-first shooting, travel and compact creator workflows. | Desk, hub, rugged enclosure or flexible multi-device setups. |
Professional workflow
Start every important shoot with prepared media and enough remaining capacity. Record a test using the exact production settings, replay it and check that the drive remains mounted. On a gimbal, complete the balance and movement test with every accessory installed.
After the shoot, copy the footage to primary storage and create a second independent backup before clearing the Planck. An SSD connected to the camera is capture media—not an archive and not a backup until the files exist safely elsewhere.
If you edit directly from the drive, keep application caches and previews on appropriate local storage where practical. Leave free space, eject the drive correctly and maintain a consistent folder and checksum or verification routine for valuable work.

Planck states that the Creator SSD supports direct ProRes recording on compatible iPhone Pro models: 4K60 on iPhone 15 Pro and up to 4K120 on supported iPhone 16/17 Pro models. Availability also depends on capture settings and software, so test your exact configuration.
The official specification lists 1TB and 2TB capacities, NVMe storage, USB-C via USB 3.2 Gen 2 and manufacturer-rated read/write speeds up to 1050 MB/s. Real performance depends on device, workload, temperature and free capacity.
Planck says the Creator SSD works with and without phone cases and includes a USB-C extender, but case shapes and port recesses vary. Check the current compatibility guidance and make sure the connector seats fully without pressure.
Planck lists compatible USB-C Android phones, tablets and macOS, Windows and Linux computers. The default exFAT file system supports cross-platform use, but device USB standards and supported features vary.
Read this carefully before using the code: Planck’s current refund policy says discounted sales, including orders made with discount codes, are final. Its product page separately advertises a three-year warranty for the Creator SSD.
