Rocca Calascio in Winter
Snow-covered streets, mountain landscapes and one of Italy's most photogenic destinations. A winter photography trip to Rocca Calascio with the Fujifilm X100VI.
During this trip to Rocca Calascio, I travelled with just one camera: the Fujifilm X100VI. In the accompanying video below you'll find examples of the photographs captured during the trip, along with the custom Fujifilm film simulation recipe I used throughout the journey.
Some places seem almost designed for photographers, and Rocca Calascio is one of them.
Perched high in the mountains of Abruzzo, Rocca Calascio is already one of Italy's most spectacular locations. Add fresh winter snow, crisp mountain air and the atmosphere that comes with travelling just before Christmas, and it becomes something truly special.
This particular trip reminded me why I love travelling with a simple camera setup.
For the entire journey I carried only the Fujifilm X100VI. No additional lenses. No heavy backpack full of gear. No decisions about focal lengths. Just one camera, one lens and complete freedom to focus on photography.
That simplicity is exactly why the X100VI has become one of my favourite travel cameras of all time.
Arriving at Rocca Calascio
The journey is part of the experience.
As you climb into the mountains the scenery changes dramatically. Villages become quieter, roads narrower and eventually the landscape opens into snow-covered hills stretching across the Abruzzo countryside.
The famous fortress dominates the skyline, creating a scene that feels more cinematic than real. Even before reaching the castle itself, photographic opportunities seem endless.
Snow-covered stone buildings. Ancient alleyways. Local residents going about their day. Light spilling across old doorways. Every turn reveals another frame waiting to be captured.
For travel and street photographers, it is almost impossible not to stop every few minutes.
Why the Fujifilm X100VI Was Perfect For This Trip
One of the biggest challenges when travelling is deciding what gear to bring.
Should you pack multiple lenses? A zoom? A second camera body?
I've spent years travelling with interchangeable lens systems and while they offer incredible flexibility, they can also become a distraction.
The X100VI removes that entire conversation.
Its fixed 23mm lens (35mm equivalent) is one of the most versatile focal lengths available. Wide enough for landscapes, perfect for environmental portraits and ideal for documentary-style travel photography.
More importantly, it completely removes lens anxiety.
There are no decisions to make. No lenses to swap. No moments missed because you're changing gear.
You simply lift the camera and take the photograph.
For a destination like Rocca Calascio, that simplicity allowed me to stay immersed in the experience rather than thinking about equipment.
Looking For A Fujifilm X100VI?
The X100VI remains one of the hardest cameras to find in stock due to worldwide demand.

Exploring the Village
While most visitors focus on the castle itself, I found myself spending just as much time wandering through the surrounding village.
Winter transforms the atmosphere completely.
The snow softens everything. The stone buildings feel warmer. The streets become quieter. Every corner seems to reveal another interesting composition.
Some of my favourite images from the trip weren't photographs of the fortress at all. They were small moments happening around it.
A local resident walking through the snow. Footprints leading down an empty alleyway. A doorway illuminated by winter light.
These are the images that tell the story of a place rather than simply documenting it.
The compact size of the X100VI helps enormously in these situations. People rarely react to it in the same way they would a larger professional setup, allowing moments to unfold naturally.
My Custom Film Simulation
One of the reasons I continue to enjoy Fujifilm cameras is the shooting experience itself.
For this trip I used my own custom film simulation recipe, which gave the images a slightly nostalgic feel while preserving plenty of detail and colour.
Winter conditions can be challenging. Bright snow, deep shadows and rapidly changing weather often create difficult exposures. The X100VI handled everything exceptionally well.
Many of the photographs required very little editing afterwards, allowing me to focus more on shooting and less on post-production.
If you're interested in trying the same settings for yourself, you'll find the complete recipe demonstrated in the video featured above.
A Photographer's Destination Worth Visiting
Standing near the fortress, surrounded by snow-covered mountains and endless views across Abruzzo, it's easy to understand why Rocca Calascio has become such a popular destination for photographers.
Whether you enjoy landscapes, street photography, travel photography or simply documenting your adventures, this location offers something for everyone.
Trips like this remind me that photography isn't always about having the latest equipment or carrying the largest camera bag.
Sometimes the best camera is simply the one that encourages you to explore more, walk further and stay present in the moment.
For me, that's exactly what the Fujifilm X100VI did during this trip.
If you're planning a winter visit to Italy and enjoy photography, Rocca Calascio deserves a place on your list.
