Knowing where things live removes a surprising amount of friction from the editing process.

The biggest obstacle when opening new editing software is often not the editing itself. It is simply not knowing where anything is.

Before trying to understand every adjustment inside PhotoLab, spend some time becoming familiar with the image browser, the main image preview and the adjustment palettes.

Once that basic geography makes sense, the software immediately becomes easier because you can stay focused on the photograph rather than searching through the interface.

The most useful beginner workflow is often much simpler than people expect.

Once the technical foundation is in place, I would move straight into the corrections that have the biggest visual effect on the photograph: exposure, highlights, shadows, contrast, white balance and colour.

These adjustments determine how the photograph reads before you begin making more detailed local corrections.

Do not fix things that are not broken

It is very easy when learning software to feel that every control should be used. That is usually the quickest way to over-edit an image.

Instead, look at the photograph and ask what it actually needs. Perhaps the exposure is already good and only the highlights need controlling. Perhaps the colour is strong but the shadows need opening slightly.

I prefer to introduce them later in the process because it keeps the workflow simpler. There is little point in building complicated masks before the overall exposure and colour are correct.

The aim is rarely to make the local adjustment itself visible. The viewer should simply feel that the photograph reads more clearly.
