Dehancer + Capture One Film Workflow
How I combine Capture One and Dehancer to move from a clean digital RAW edit into a richer film-inspired finish using film profiles, halation, bloom, grain and analogue-style tonal behaviour.
My aim with this workflow is not simply to place a vintage preset over a photograph. Capture One handles the core image preparation, while Dehancer becomes a dedicated finishing stage where I can shape the film response much more deliberately. The result is a workflow that keeps the strength of Capture One while giving me access to analogue-inspired characteristics that are difficult to reproduce with conventional styles alone.

Can Dehancer be used with Capture One?
Yes. My workflow is to complete the core image preparation in Capture One, create a TIFF, then send that file into Dehancer through the Edit With workflow. Capture One remains the foundation of the edit while Dehancer handles the final film-emulation stage, including film profiles, grain, bloom, halation and deeper analogue-inspired finishing controls.

01 / Why This Workflow
Why I combine Capture One and Dehancer
The two applications solve different parts of the editing process, which is exactly why they work well together.
Capture One is where I want to establish the photograph properly. Exposure, white balance, basic tonal work, colour correction and the overall starting point can all be handled before the image ever reaches the film-emulation stage.
Dehancer then becomes the finishing environment. Instead of asking one application to do everything, I am separating the technical preparation of the image from the final visual character.
That distinction matters because a convincing film look is about more than colour. Film has texture, highlight behaviour, grain structure, density and optical characteristics that are difficult to mimic convincingly with a basic preset.
The core workflow principle
Capture One builds the photograph. Dehancer builds the film character. Keeping those two stages separate gives me much more control over the final image.

Start with a strong Capture One image
Film emulation works better when it starts from a photograph that already has a considered foundation.
In the tutorial, the image is already prepared before it enters Dehancer. That is deliberate. I do not use film emulation as a way of rescuing a poorly prepared image.
I want exposure, colour balance, crop and any necessary cleanup to make sense first. Once that foundation is right, the film treatment becomes a creative decision rather than a corrective one.
Why TIFF makes sense here
The image is passed into Dehancer as a TIFF. That gives me a high-quality rendered file to work from while preserving the Capture One base edit I have already established.
It also makes the workflow predictable. The RAW stage remains inside Capture One, while the TIFF becomes the finished-image canvas for the analogue processing stage.
04 / Film Profiles
Use the film profile as a starting point
Choosing a film profile should establish direction rather than dictate the finished image.
One of the easiest ways to begin inside Dehancer is by moving through the available film profiles and watching how each one changes the colour, contrast, density and general personality of the image.
I like this stage because it lets me react visually rather than beginning with a blank set of controls. I can quickly see whether the photograph feels better with something warmer, cleaner, more muted, more contrasty or more textured.
Profiles are not the finished grade
This is where it is easy to confuse film emulation with presets. The film profile gives me a starting response, but I still have access to the wider Dehancer toolset afterwards.
That means the chosen profile can be refined instead of simply accepted. The final look remains mine rather than becoming whatever the preset happens to produce.

Different profiles can produce noticeably different grain behaviour, and that is one of the things I look at when comparing film stocks in Dehancer.
Some images suit a cleaner response. Others benefit from a heavier texture that helps soften the digital perfection of the file and gives the photograph more tactile character.
My approach to grain
I want grain to feel embedded into the photograph rather than sitting on top of it. If the first thing I notice is the grain itself, I have probably pushed it too far.
07 / Refinement
Move beyond the preset and refine the response
The deeper controls are where Dehancer becomes much more useful as a workflow tool.
Once the general film direction is established, I can refine how the plugin interprets the image through source compensation, film developer settings and tonal controls.
In the tutorial, this includes areas such as temperature compensation, tint compensation, colour separation, colour boost, gamma response, film compression, white point and colour density.
I do not necessarily adjust everything on every photograph. The point is that those controls exist when the starting profile needs to be pushed toward the image rather than forcing the image toward the profile.

My Workflow Perspective
The aim isn't to fake film. It's to make the digital image feel less digital.
What interests me about Dehancer is not the idea of pretending that a photograph was shot on a particular roll of film. I am more interested in what analogue characteristics can bring to a modern digital file.
Bloom, halation, grain, density and different colour responses can all change how an image feels. Used carefully, they help move the photograph away from the perfectly clean digital starting point and give it a little more texture, imperfection and personality.
