Photoshop Retouching with Retouch4me
My fast portrait retouching workflow using Retouch4me inside Photoshop for blemish cleanup, dodge and burn, skin tone refinement and makeup finishing without giving up manual control.
Retouching software is most valuable to me when it removes repetitive work without removing the photographer from the process. In this tutorial I use Retouch4me to create the foundation of a portrait retouch quickly, then return to Photoshop for the judgement and manual cleanup that still make the finished image feel considered rather than automated.

My approach is to let automation handle the repetitive foundation and keep Photoshop available for judgement. I duplicate the base layer, begin with blemish cleanup, move into dodge and burn, refine the overall skin tone, add any makeup treatment that genuinely helps the image, then manually remove spill or unwanted corrections before export. The plugins accelerate the workflow; they don't remove the need to look carefully at the photograph.

Why I combine Retouch4me with Photoshop
I don't see AI retouching as a choice between automation and traditional editing. The useful workflow sits somewhere between the two.
Portrait retouching contains a surprising amount of repetitive work. Removing temporary blemishes, evening small tonal inconsistencies and preparing a clean starting point can consume a large amount of editing time before the more interesting visual decisions even begin.
That is where Retouch4me becomes useful in this workflow. I use the plugins to accelerate those foundation stages while continuing to work inside Photoshop, where I can inspect the result, intervene locally and change direction whenever I need to.
The aim isn't to make somebody look artificial. For beauty and portrait work, I want the surface of the skin to remain believable while temporary distractions and uneven areas are refined.

I like this order because it starts with correction and gradually moves toward finishing.
There is little point refining makeup colour while obvious temporary blemishes are still distracting you. Equally, I don't want to spend time manually perfecting every tiny skin transition before seeing how much of that repetitive work the automated foundation can handle.
By working progressively, I can stop at any stage if the portrait already has what it needs.

My Photoshop retouching workflow
This is the practical order shown in the tutorial and the reasoning behind each stage.

Duplicate the starting layer
I begin by duplicating the image layer so I retain an original reference underneath the working version and can compare the retouch more easily.

Remove temporary blemishes with Heal
I deal with obvious distractions first. In the tutorial the automatic result already gives me a strong starting point, so I don't adjust something merely for the sake of adjusting it.

Build the tonal foundation with Dodge & Burn
Once obvious blemishes have been addressed, I move into broader tonal refinement. The aim is to reduce distracting light and dark inconsistencies while retaining believable skin detail.

Refine the complexion with Skin Tone
Tonal smoothness and colour consistency are different jobs. Skin Tone follows the cleanup so I can shape the complexion after the structural distractions have already been reduced.

Add Face Makeup only if the image needs it
The makeup stage is more creative than corrective. I experiment with eye, cheek and lip colour where appropriate rather than treating it as a mandatory part of every portrait.

Manually clean anything the automation gets wrong
In the tutorial some colour reaches the hair. Rather than accepting the automated result, I use a soft feathered eraser to remove the unwanted effect and keep control of the final image.

Inspect the portrait before export
I compare the final result with the starting image and look for areas that still need healing, masking or reduction. Faster retouching only helps if the finished photograph still holds up when inspected carefully.
05 / Natural Skin
Why preserving skin texture matters
Cleaner skin and smoother skin aren't necessarily the same thing—and neither should automatically mean blurred skin.
One reason automated portrait retouching has historically made photographers cautious is the tendency for quick skin effects to erase texture along with the distractions.
That isn't what I want from a beauty workflow.
I want pores and fine skin information to remain plausible while temporary marks, harsh tonal transitions or colour inconsistencies are reduced. When the texture disappears completely, the retouch often starts drawing attention to itself.
Retouch the distraction, not the identity
There is an important distinction between removing a temporary blemish and trying to redesign somebody's face.
For the kind of workflow demonstrated here, I'm interested in cleanup, consistency and polish—not making the subject look like a different person.
My checkpoint
If I notice the skin treatment before I notice the portrait, I want to look again at whether I've pushed the retouch too far.

Detailed manual dodge and burn remains one of the most controllable ways to refine skin and tonal transitions. The automated approach can dramatically accelerate the foundation, after which you can decide whether the image justifies additional manual work.

Always inspect hairlines, eyes, lips, clothing edges and other areas where a correction may have travelled too far.

Erase, heal, mask or reduce the treatment where the software's decision isn't the decision you would have made.

Removing all texture
Skin that becomes perfectly uniform can quickly stop looking like skin.

Judge the whole portrait
Zoom out regularly. A technically perfect patch at high magnification isn't useful if the overall photograph begins to look artificial.

The hardware behind this workflow
The software provides the automation, but I still like direct physical control when I'm inspecting and finishing a portrait.
The tutorial is demonstrated in Photoshop using a Wacom Movink pen display alongside a Logitech MX mouse and Apple keyboard.
A pen display isn't required to use the plugins, but direct pen-on-screen control becomes especially useful once I move from broad automated corrections into local cleanup, healing, masking and other detailed finishing.
That combination is representative of how I think about the whole workflow: automate where automation genuinely saves time, then use precise hands-on tools where my judgement matters more.
My Retouching Perspective
Faster isn't useful if I lose control of the portrait
I've spent a large part of my professional photography career working with faces, skin, beauty and commercial portraiture. What interests me about AI-assisted retouching isn't the promise that I never need to retouch again. It's the possibility of spending less time on repetitive corrections while keeping more of my time for the decisions that actually require judgement.
That's why I like this Photoshop workflow. The plugins create a fast foundation, but I can still erase an unwanted correction, heal something manually, change the intensity or decide that a stage isn't needed at all.
