DxO PhotoLab High-ISO Noise Reduction Workflow

How I use DeepPRIME XD3 to clean a difficult ISO 5000 RAW file while preserving detail, colour and the natural character of the photograph.

High-ISO noise is one of those problems that can make an otherwise successful photograph feel unusable. In this workflow I'm starting with a genuinely difficult RAW file from the Sony RX100 VII, photographed at ISO 5000, and showing how I use DxO PhotoLab and DeepPRIME XD3 to recover a much cleaner image without building a complicated correction or masking setup.

How do I remove heavy noise from a high-ISO RAW photograph?

My starting point is DeepPRIME XD3 inside DxO PhotoLab. It combines RAW demosaicing and advanced AI noise reduction, making it particularly useful for demanding files where I want to suppress luminance and colour noise without simply smearing away fine texture. With the ISO 5000 Sony RX100 VII file shown here, I start with the default XD3 processing before deciding whether anything else actually needs changing.

01 / The Problem

What high ISO actually does to a RAW file

Noise isn't just grain. On a difficult file it can affect colour, fine detail, shadows and the overall clarity of the photograph.

The example I'm using here was photographed on a Sony RX100 VII at ISO 5000. That's deliberately useful for this demonstration because the RX100 VII uses a relatively small 1-inch sensor compared with the larger sensors found in many interchangeable-lens cameras.

Push a file like this into a demanding low-light situation and noise becomes particularly obvious in darker areas, smooth surfaces and areas of subtle colour.

The problem isn't simply that the photograph looks grainy. Heavy noise can begin interfering with the detail you're actually trying to preserve.

The workflow objective

Good noise reduction shouldn't simply make the photograph smoother. I want to remove distracting noise while retaining believable detail, edge definition, colour and texture.

02 / DeepPRIME XD3

Why I start with DeepPRIME XD3

The important part for me is that DxO approaches RAW noise reduction during the reconstruction of the image rather than treating denoising purely as a later cosmetic effect.

DeepPRIME is built around machine-learning processing of RAW data. DxO combines denoising and demosaicing — the stage where the sensor's RAW information is reconstructed into a usable colour image — rather than treating them as completely separate processes.

DeepPRIME XD3 is the more detail-focused version of that processing and is designed for particularly demanding RAW files.

With PhotoLab 9.6, XD3 supports both Bayer and X-Trans sensors, which means the Sony Bayer-sensor file used in this workflow can now use the same latest-generation XD3 processing.

Why this matters visually

I don't want noise reduction to give me a technically clean photograph that no longer looks photographic.

The value of the more sophisticated processing is finding the balance between suppressing the unwanted noise and retaining the information that makes the photograph feel detailed.

03 / My Starting Point

Why I test the default settings first

More sliders don't automatically produce a better photograph. I want to know what the processing is already giving me before I start changing it.

One of the main things I wanted to demonstrate in the video is how little work can actually be required.

Rather than immediately reaching for every available control, I select DeepPRIME XD3 and look carefully at what the default processing does to the photograph.

On this ISO 5000 file the transformation is already significant. A large amount of distracting luminance and colour noise disappears while important details remain visible.

Don't adjust for the sake of adjusting

If the default DeepPRIME XD3 result already gives me the balance of cleanliness and detail I'm looking for, I don't see any value in moving controls simply to make the workflow appear more complicated.

04 / Step By Step

My basic high-ISO noise reduction workflow

Start simple, inspect carefully and only add complexity when the photograph genuinely requires it.

Open the original RAW file

Work from the RAW file wherever possible so DeepPRIME has access to the original sensor information rather than trying to repair an already processed JPEG.

Install the correct DxO Optics Module

PhotoLab can use camera-and-lens-specific calibration data to correct optical characteristics and provide a strong technical starting point for the file.

Select DeepPRIME XD3

For a particularly demanding high-ISO image, XD3 is where I begin when maximum-quality denoising and fine-detail reconstruction are the priority.

Inspect detail and smooth areas

Don't judge the result solely from one noisy shadow. Check fine edges, texture, colour transitions, smooth surfaces and areas of naturally soft detail.

Adjust only if necessary

If the default result already works, leave it alone. If the image genuinely needs refinement, make measured changes while repeatedly comparing the result with the original.

Export the finished file

Once the denoising and wider edit are where I want them, I export according to the final destination rather than applying one generic output to every photograph.

05 / Detail Workflow

Noise reduction should preserve detail, not erase it

The hardest part of denoising isn't removing noise. It's knowing which information should remain.

Aggressive noise reduction can make almost any photograph look cleaner if you're prepared to sacrifice enough detail.

That's not the result I'm looking for.

In this photograph I pay attention to the structural detail in the train, the platform and the surrounding architecture. Those areas give me useful visual references for whether the processing is genuinely recovering the photograph or simply smoothing everything indiscriminately.

Look beyond 100% pixel peeping

Magnified inspection is useful when judging technical processing, but the finished photograph also has to work at normal viewing size.

I want to understand what happens at pixel level without losing sight of how the whole image actually feels.

The most aggressive processing option doesn't automatically need to be used on every photograph.

I tend to judge this image by image rather than applying the same philosophy to every RAW file.

A clean low-ISO photograph may not need the same level of intervention as a small-sensor image photographed at ISO 5000 in difficult available light.

Why this workflow is particularly useful for compact cameras

Strong RAW processing can change the practical limits of a small camera because you're less afraid of allowing ISO to rise when the photograph demands it.

The Sony RX100 VII is an interesting example because its portability is one of the reasons you'd choose it in the first place.

But the relatively small sensor means high-ISO files can become more demanding than those from larger full-frame cameras.

Good noise reduction doesn't magically turn one sensor into another, but it can give you considerably more confidence in the usable files coming from a compact camera.

That's important to the way I think about workflow. Software isn't simply there to rescue mistakes. Sometimes it allows smaller, lighter equipment to remain useful in situations where you might otherwise have felt forced to carry something larger.

08 / Real-World Use

Where DeepPRIME noise reduction makes the biggest difference

The value isn't simply cleaning an ISO number. It's helping preserve photographs made in situations where light and shutter speed forced a compromise.

  • Travel and street photography after dark.
  • Available-light event photography.
  • Indoor photography where flash isn't appropriate.
  • Wildlife and action where shutter speed has to remain high.
  • Concert and performance photography.
  • Compact-camera photography in poor light.
  • RAW files where shadow recovery reveals additional noise.

In all of those situations I would rather make the photograph at the ISO I need than miss the moment because I was frightened of noise.

The processing workflow happens afterwards. The photograph still has to exist first.
